Using IPad apps w/ FA

So, I am trying to use Thor, Nave, Sunriser, Animoog, etc. with the FA as controller (for the first time)and I'm getting mixed up with the Midi channels. Most of the time the IPad app is coming in on the upper (part one) channel on the FA but I have, for instance, a piano sound from the FA is there also. If. I turn down the piano sound volume using the sound modify knob, the Ipad sound goes down also. How do I get the IPad external sound to be independent of the part 1 sound volume? I'd like to play the IPad generated sound underneath and independent of the FA sound channel.
