4gb vs 8gb USB pen drive

4gb vs 8gb USB pen drive

Hi, some of you may have had similar experiences....I have a Sony microvault USB pen (4GB) and i'm quite pleased with its performance, so I thought I would upgrade to an 8gb microvault click excellence and use the 4gb as a backup (for live work). The 8gb excellence is quicker on paper and on the Mac book, however annoyingly it is slower on the G.

A smallish project took 1 min 53 secs to load on my older (supposedly slower) pen but 2min 37 secs on the 'quicker' pen.

Needless to say I will stick with the 4 gb pen and find another use for the 8gb (unless anyone has some ideas here).

Does the G have issues with dealing with higher capacities?, so may be its best to have several smaller drives (I seem to remember a similar post on this).

Thanks

I had a similar problem with a 16 GB Transcend Jetflash 600 USB flash drive. I reformatted the drive using the computer instead of the Fantom G and then copy and pasted all the contents of my old flash drive to the new one and it solved the problem.

Are you guys saying that I could actually improve my G7's loading speed by buying the right type of drive?

You probably won't see much of an improvement in loading time unless your project contains large sample files. However, you should see an improvement in writing time when saving large samples.

kwfk, thanks for your advice - reformatted the drive on the mac and copied in projects as you said. Its not quite up to the speed of the 4gb (on the G) but better. When I loaded songs previously from the 8gb pen I was getting the 'processing' message, which I had not seen before using the 4gb pen. Now songs load from the 8gb pen in an instant. much appreciated.

Which brand or type do you most recommend, I've been using a basic inexpensive sandisk

I've only used 3 flash drives with the Fantom G: an old 1 GB SanDisk, a 4 GB HP, and a 16 GB Transcend JetFlash 600. I haven't noticed a significant difference in loading time, but the Transcend does have faster writing times when saving large samples.
