RD700NX.....Just starting it folks, let's go!!!!

This is truly hilarious and I'm not laughing!!!! Roland is investing a lot of time in this RD700GX series with the third release (GX, GXF, NX) that is truly just bells and whistles. So they incorporated an audio recorder (thats actually kind of cool) and they actually took out the expansion function...like I said they should if they couldn't keep it current with ARX series. And like I said they gave it the PH 3 "Ivory feel" (not so crazy about the Ivory feel thing though) So far, I'm ok. But I'm upset because they are essentially using rehashing the same board and giving it new presets and a larger graphic screen and expecting users to "upgrade" to the NX from the GXF!! I feel insulted by this. Looks like I'll stick with what I have because my biggest problem with the GXF was the SN EP's, but listening to the video demo, doesn't sound like an improvement at all. My custom presets are doable for now.

I really just wish THIS board was released first and no more. I think that this board will satisfy most users who don't already have an RD. But for those who do, I really don't see the point... but I could be wrong. I will need to check out the SN EP's when the NX is available and see if they improved them because in the video it sounds like the same old same old!

But, but, there's a sexy new screen!

They claim there are three SN APs in there: Concert, Studio, and Brilliant. How many are in the RD-700GXF? How many in any Roland product that has the telltale 'F' in the product name?

How does the dedicated "sound focus" knob negatively impact this model compared to the RD-700GXF? IOW, what functionality did they take away or will be less convenient to access?

PHAIII I applaud, though smooth plastic and not ivory feel would have been even more welcomed.

SRX I can take or leave. I guess I'm happy the SRX is gone since I would have been tempted to fill them with lame 10 year old samples at mammoth prices. It's too bad there seems to be an engineered limit of 64MB on these boards - didn't they know about Moore's Law when they were busy designing them?

It doesn't seem like they've done anything new with the EPs.

Same old crappy joystick adding needless length. Probably same (too heavy) weight.

The FP-7F looks like a viable board, I wonder how many basically different SN APs are in there? If the same as the NX I think I'd go that way myself as I don't really need the EPs, TW organs (though I'd take a SN pipe organ in a second), or crappy joystick.

~How many in any Roland product that has the telltale 'F' in the product name?

There are technically 4 distinct pianos on the GXF. But like you mentioned, people will be mesmerized by the "sexy new screen". Now the sound focus might be of interested, but I've been successful with the onboard EQ. Yes they have the PHA 3 thingy, but with the unresolved, unfixed Ivory wear thing along with it, damn. Like I said in a previous post, either stay with the current expansion series or drop it!! Hence no expansion for the NX. Yes dewster, I think you can hear the same thing as I did. The SN EP's sound exactly as before...no change. I guess we'll see when it is released.

Anywho, the NX seems cool enough if I didn't already have the GXF, so I won't be "upgrading".

Let's hear what the rest of you folks think.

Re: RD700NX.....Just starting it folks, let's go!!!!

Yes, if you have a GXF I don't see much point in "upgrading". Though PHAIII may be enough to push me over the edge. I sincerely wish it had a music rest. The FP-7F is looking more interesting the more I think about it - speakers, music rest, 3 pedal option. I wish I knew how the SN APs in it stacked up to the GXF and the NX. Why oh why doesn't Roland release manuals at the same time they issue the press release?

Re: RD700NX.....Just starting it folks, let's go!!!!

31 Aug 2010, 22:21
Yeah you may have a point about the FP-7F! It's basically a NX with speakers and minus the SN EP's. However, you get a three pedal unit, speakers, music rest....not a bad deal! Oh and there is a mic input and you can apply BOSS/Roland's Harmony FX technology from the BOSS VE-20. Man if I didn't have a DP right now, boy would I be shopping!!!!

Oh and don't worry too much whether or not the NX has better AP's than the GXF. It's all the same, trust me. I believe the NX is ultimately a GXF with "better" presets......really.

Just to make things clear I think you should not consider the RD-700GXF as a model on it's own since it's a GX with the K-RD700GX1 expantion installed from factory. Nothing else.
In fact this is not even listed in Roland.Com (yes I know it is on Roland US).
However, there are in fact 4 RD-700 Models now:
RD-700
RD-700SX
RD-700GX
RD-700NX

In the end, KPro81, you don't need to feel insulted. Roland is keep his RD line up to date and competitive. It's not a "new" model otherwise it would be called RD-other-thing-then-700 ;-)
I understand that most of the GX users will not want to upgrade to the NX. In my oppinion the only good reason for doing it would be the PHAIII Keyboard. But probably that would not be worth the trade for the great majoraty of users.

My main gripe is that we all knew that Roland could have done this initially with the original GX when it came out 2 years ago! The technology was there for them to steal the market in one shot rather than go through these different permutations of GXs. That's all. I still applaud Roland for their technological prowess however!

~The 3-pedal unit (RPU-3) is an option that applies to both the RD- and the FP-series.

This looks promising. I think I'll apply it to my GX/F.

KPro81, you feel insulted because a company is progressing with their products? I think all companies now should stop advancing their technologies so that people like you don't get insulted.

Nobody is forcing you to get the NX - be happy with your GX! Calm down.

~Nobody is forcing you to get the NX - be happy with your GX! Calm down.

I clearly understand that and I'm cool man.

~I think all companies now should stop advancing their technologies so that people like you don't get insulted.

That's unnecessary man.....no need for the sarcasm. All I am saying is that when the technology is there, why not capitalize on it and your competitors and steal the market then. Heck SuperNatural technology took like 20 years for Roland to perfect coming from SA synthesis. But when they debuted it in 2008, they were ready. I'm not complaining I'm just taking note of the fact that Roland could have done this 2 years ago.

But it's all good and I think the NX will definitely be a heavy contender in the stage piano market.

You didn't sound like you were calm hence a bit of my sarcasm :-) We're past that now, though, no worries.

In any case I think we shouldn't speculate about what Roland could have done or should have done, we don't really know much details of how their software and hardware development went. In any case we should be happy that the GX is receiving a lot of good words from the users and that the company is advancing further with the NX.

I'm gonna sell my RD-700GX with the K-RD700GX1.

Had the chance to play a RD-700NX and i like it much more than the GX.
The PHA-III keyboard is much more sensitive and posible to play fast repeatedly the same key.
The Supernatural sound are much better than the K-RD700GX1 samples, this is because the NX uses an engine made for supernatural use.

Sorry if my english isn't that well.

makes someone wonder how someone already was able to test ... Mmm, a beta test maybe... Let me ... It's the new da ad converters probably... Lol,

Re: RD700NX.....Just starting it folks, let's go!!!!

Hey Jabberwocky,

I don't mean the ad/dc converters.

It's a part of the v-piano that's integrated.
It's the PHA-III keyboard in combination with the new mainboard that gives you a smooth velocity curve with the supernatural sounds.

The GX has some supernatural samples but not the super natural velocity curve.

are you saying that arx-? Piano on a fantom g8 doesn't make sence because the keyboard isn't PHA-III :-).
