How long does t take to load a song within a project with 1g

Hi,

Next week i will get a G7, again, i had one befor ebut sticked to my X7, which i still have. But again i'm doubting if I should go for the G for live play. One question that i have is how long individual songs take to load, if they're in a project filled with samples (I don't mind if the project takes 5 minutes to load).
So, I loaded the project (with 1gb of samples), then I want to load a sons with sa, 50 mb of samples. Does it take more then 4 seconds?

Once the project which has all your songs in has loaded it is nearly instant switching between songs.

Loading a project is about 1-2 MB per second, depending on the amount of samples. A 30 MB project with 200 small samples loads in around 20 seconds here. As for songs, Flumper is right, since the phrase tracks are already pre-loaded, switching to another song takes less than a second.

Ok, this sounds very good. Next question: wih a USB-stick from say 4gb, is it possible to load a poject of 4 gig? Or is this depening on the internal memeroy (max 1 gig)

you just answered yourself to your question :) you can't 1gb max

If you have that many samples I would advise splitting your project into 2 halfs ( or more depending on how many breaks you have in your set).

Hell of a lot of samples for a live set tho. I thought I was going overboard using 512 meg per set (40 mins) . lol

I wouldn't trust my Fantom-G for loading and playing that much amount of sample data in a live situation. Maybe it's just me, but I think that it's too risky for me personally.

Im curious about this too. Im going to be getting hold of a Fantom G7 in the next few weeks .Ive been using my Fantom X8 with about 170mg worth of samples but it took about 10 mins to load in.Is the USB2 medium a lot quicker than the old PC Flash card?

Nice to know speed differencies,if any or is dictated by the RAM still?

I believe that the deciding factors for the load time are RAM DIMM manufacturer, synth's CPU speed, plus the USB stick itself. As far as I know, USB sticks are generally quicker than various flash cards, especially if they are of old type such as PCMCIA cards. Another big difference is that the Fantom-G is equipped with a quicker CPU.

I've read some very small load times in here from time to time, something like 3 or 4 minutes for a 700MByte project and so on. I think that this is not true. My fastest, bestest, USB stick that I have tried - the Sony MicroVault Click 8GB - features load times about 120~130MBytes per minute. Maybe someone will say that my RAM is not so quick, but I don't think so. It's a Transcend 512MByte DIMM and is some of the best around.

Thanks Cyclops,nice info mate.

Im sure the USB2 format/the faster CPU in the G must have some sort of influence on the speed.I still think Roland made a mistake using the same type of RAM but I assume there must have been a design reason for it.Faster RAM would have been the logical thing to have done seeing that they improved most of the other hardware in the G from the X.

It would be nice to hear from anyone else who uses a lot of samples. My MB count will rise quite a bit because my next project will involve using a lot of samples (loops, vocal phrases, guitar phrases).Ive never had any issues with the Fantom X in a live situation but my only concern is my initial load time when I load my project in.I may be talking of 500MB worth, maybe more when I get my G7.

Some times power failures can occur or someone turns off the power accidently etc etc or maybe there is a quick turnaround on a stage where you need to set up in say 15 mins !

Anyone else with any info would me most useful.

Concerning power failures during live situations, I'd suggest that you always use a UPS device. I've bought one since day one for studio use, plus I've bought one for live use too. This saves precious time when there is a short power failure, eliminating the need to load big projects again. Plus it protects from power surges when the power supply is unstable or problematic for any reason.

Cyclops, You've known me a while and can trust me ;) I just loaded my second set in which is exactly 351 meg and timed it. It took 2 minutes and 5 seconds so 4 mins for a 700 meg project doesn't seem unreasonable to me at all. The only difference that might be happening here is I use a lot of large samples not loads of small ones. Maybe this is making the difference.

The Ram used was a generic 512 meg that cost about 10 quid.
The USB pendrive used is a Dane Elec 2 GB.

p.s. Can't see the ram being the issue here on speed. It's way faster that the transfer rates we are talking about. I'm guessing if people are experiencing big time differences on loading it will be the speed of the usb pen drive.

Flumpster that sounds interesting.....351MB in 2 minutes is good.Thats way faster than my 10 mins for 170MB on the old Flash cards. So it seems go for a good quality USB Flash drive will make a difference..... many thanks.

My sample length's will vary too, some maybe one shots and snippets and others maybe phrases of backing vocals and guitar riffs.
