Music Terminology: Bar?

Music Terminology: Bar?

I'm illiterate when it comes to music. When I'm in the sequencer, what exactly is a bar? Does it equal a certain number of measures?

To give more info, the track is at a tempo of 105 and the beat is 4/4.

;-)

Bars are basically a way of dividing up musical phrases into equal understandable parts. If you wrote a song without bars (impossible in the digital realm) it would be very difficult to keep track of what beat you were on and where you were in the song as a whole.

In 4/4 a bar consists of 4 beats and each beat is worth a quarter note. The tempo does not have an effect on this.

As I know, "measure" in American English = "bar" in British English. I use both equally.

Actually, "measure" is straight from the Italian "misura" which is an acceptable synonym for "battuta" (=bar, or whatever). I believe the French use "mesure," too.

Involution.
