Mouse Control Problem ?

Mouse Control Problem ?

Don't know if this has already been brought up.

Load up the default demo song.
It shows 16 midi tracks and 8 audio tracks on screen by default.
Select midi track 1 and then 2 by clicking on it at the top of the list. They select ok. The Further you go down the list it starts selecting the ones under where you click.

Going to try another mouse to make sure.

edit.. Second mouse doing exactly the same. By the time you get to audio track 5 and click on the bottom of that track your selecting 2 under it.

Also I wouldn't have expected the horizontal scroll bar to fast forward and rewind the song when playing when I just want to look what section is coming up. I have FF and rewind on my transport keys and can jump to any point by clicking on the bars.

Sounds like a software bug: the hit-test code and the actual drawing code are not in agreement regarding the actual location of ui components. That's why, as a programmer, I like to unify the drawing and hit-testing code in a single function whenever possible (although it's a bit slower than simply calculating what entry was hit if you're talking about colums and rows).

Same Problem by me

Logitechmouse
OS V1.20

Songplay Window,8Midi,16AudioTracks

->Left Mouseklick on "Trackname" of Audiotrack3,Track 3 OR 4 is selected.

->Left Mouseklick on "Trackname" of Audiotrack13,Track 14 OR 15 is selected.

No MOUSE Problem:
Leftklick in the Songplay Window on Phrases or Samples, the Tracks select correct!

Question for Dan.

We know you can't give out much information but is it possible for small patches to be released as these small bugs are found and fixed as opposed to waiting another 6 months for a big update. This is gonna drive me nuts. If it was consistently wrong all the way down the list I could live with it knowing that I just had to select the one above but you never know what your gonna select. lol

Confirmed: Logitech, Saitek, Microsoft mice.

It's obvious: they just haven't translated correctly to the new 24 track design.

Confirmed here also on my G7 while using a Logitech LX3 Optical Laser wired mouse. It makes you wonder why Roland engineers didn't check stuff like this out first before they shipped out yet another problematic OS update. :(

Another thing Roland didn't fix was the spelling error in Studio Mode/F4 (Control)/Arpeggio/Arpeggio "Swich" which should be Switch of course. I guess Roland overlooked such a trivial error because they're thinking no one uses the Arpeggio much on the Fantom G anyway right? :D Sad... Not only do we have to program our own Arpeggio's for the most part (unlike the Yamaha Motif ES/XS series ;) but we are constantly reminded when we go into the Arpeggio settings that Roland doesn't know how to spell correctly either. ;) I guess Roland has bigger fish to fry eh? ;)

Maybe the guy checking the mouse click precision in song mode when testing OS 1.20 was doing it after hours at his house after consuming large amounts of sake perhaps?? :D Sheemms closesd enufffgh too mmees! :D Hiccup.. Image

>> Sorry for letting out a little of my frustrations on the group here and for the cynicism. :| There ARE a lot of good things that were accomplished with OS 1.20 and I commend Roland on their "overall" effort on formulating the OS 1.20 update. :) These "little" things are annoying yes, but we all realize that the Fantom G is a "continuing" work in progress. ;) So we shouldn't expect that any particular OS update will be the "be all/do all" fix we all hope for. I too hope though that Roland will release the next OS update before another half of years time before we see it. :(

A little back story:

When Auto-Track was being considered, there's was a discussion on how the track arrangement should default in the Song Recorder. In the US we wanted the default view to be 16 MIDI tracks in the song recorder so it would make sequencing at the retail view simple. However, some JVs in Europe and Asia pressed for a 24-track view, in order to display some of the audio tracks. And that was a discussion that happened right up to the release of 1.20. To tweak the mouse to this view, when we know most people would change it anyway, didn't seem enough to justify the delay of 1.20.

The solution is obvious enough to change the track magnification from 24 to 16 tracks. Or 8 tracks. Or 4 tracks. Or 2 or fill the whole screen with a scrolling waveform.

I can deal with humor and insults directed at me, buts let's be aware that the engineers are friends of mine and they work extremely hard. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to do some arpeggiating.

LoL... So hard that it **only** took them over half a year to put in what they left out and what should have been there from the start... And yet so many things still not there... I'd hate to see if they were slackin'.. If they do work hard, then maybe they are hiring new inexperienced engineers that aren't too good but in the end can get the job done.. Maybe not. maybe it's something else that we ain't supossed to know... :)

I for one am really relieved 1.20 is out, as I stated elsewhere! And instead of mocking I would like to encourage the Roland techs to publish more minor upgrades, even if things aren't perfect!

I would never mock "work in progress" problems, because that simply is everyday business. To attack here means you force the company to be extermely conservative in publishing updates, doing so only every year or so after a lot of betatesting.

That's *definitely* not in our interest!!!
Our attitude should be to get some mutual confidence and openness into the process working. This way we can profit from progress (and to me the 16/8 midi/audio view is *great*!) while hinting at work still to be done.

If I worked in Roland staff it would make a big difference to me if I was treated as partner in the process (and that means: in a respectful way not excluding casual critical asides) or as someone who never can satisfy user wishes no matter what (satisfy one and get twenty new in turn)...

You all know I can be very clear cut when something basic like smf export is missing for many months, and I don't have problems to be critical when necessesary. But that should not exclude basic forms of fairness and respect, at least not from my view.

We get by best if we cooperate in an uncomplicated way, where Roland techs can use our feedback from using the G, and we profit from shorter update circles. Just give them a chance on that path, which will work best for both sides!

"To tweak the mouse to this view, when we know most people would change it anyway, didn't seem enough to justify the delay of 1.20. "

Thanks for the reply Dan but I don't believe Roland was aware of this bug upon release. If they had known I'm sure they would have defaulted the view to 16 tracks.

Anyway, I'm not having a go at anyone, I've stated in another thread that 1.20 did more than I expected. I'm just hoping something like this can be fixed in a small update instead. It obviously can't be that much work. 1.21 maybe?

You are right Jimknopf. I was being somewhat flippant in my remarks although I didn't mean any disrespect to Roland engineers per se, it was merely an attempt to bring a little frivolity into the situation. I know Japanese are big on sake i.e. Nihonshu (日本酒) in particular - rice wine. If they're not on the clock and take the G home to test out, for instance, OS 1.20 :) then you would think they would hopefully abstain from imbibing any alcoholic beverages "in excess" when doing so. :) Even with a track view of "24" tracks you would think a competent engineer could sync up the mouse click with each corresponding track?? :| And again, no disrespect to Roland engineers, I'm only pointing out the obvious, which is - it doesn't work like it "should" and Roland Japan gave OS 1.20 a "24" track view as the default from the factory??.. :| I also actually prefer the 24 track view myself. The reason being is you can get more work done while on a single viewing pane (screen), thereby increasing your workflow. :) But as it now stands, and to get the accuracy that I need, I will unfortunately have to use the "16" track view instead. :(

Okay, maybe Roland DOES have bigger fish to fry but so far it's "two" 'small' fish and counting.. :D That is; if you're just count the spelling error in the arpeggio menu setting and the mouse click tracking error in 24 track viewing mode within the song play/edit screen. ;) >> Hopefully the "next" update will fix these two anomalies, eh? :) We wouldn't want to see these "small fish" start to breed and multiply on an ever increasing basis now would we? No... I didn't think so. ;)

PS: Dan, you are a trooper!! :) The videos you've made so far are extremely helpful and enlightening my friend. Kudos for your efforts and for all the support you are providing here at Roland Clan. >> If I seem a little miffed at Roland engineers please forgive me. The Japanese have a long history and even tradition in resolving to "excellence" in all they do and it would be considered an essential motto in their life's work. 卓越 - takuetsu!! :) I am just trying to remind them of something they are all too well aware of already. ;) You know, keep them on their toes and all? :)

Exactly keysme ...

... I have a high regard for Japanese engineers as well ... I worked for IBM in a past life, and I had the fortune of working with some extremely talented firmware/BIOS engineers at the IBM Yamato Labs (The venerable thinkpad), before I came over to the US.

Their attention to detail is simply commendable, and OH, they party hard till the wee hours in the morning - but they're back at work bright and early while I am still hung-over :) These guys were all about work-ethic - which is why I still believe Roland can pull it off in terms of making the G an amazing platform :)! Im pretty sure that Japan got slammed pretty hard with the economic difficulties that plague the world we live in, and it's gotta be tough on Roland I imagine.

I still think that the Fantom series of synths is simply the best out there in terms of work-flow and sound-engine design. Sure, they may not have 6000 ARPs and 1500 drum patterns or even KARMA for that matter, but I still use and love my Fantom X over my Korg M3 (Which I love for other reasons), both amazing pieces of hardware+software - built by a large number of little japanese engineers :)!

Im sure NAMM 2009 will bring goodies - I will be looking G'ward for my original projects next year. Till then, Im just having fun with the Roland stuff I have!!
