1GB DIMM?

Re: 1GB DIMM?

I just got the G8 a few days ago... using it for live recording, composing, etc...

Another reason why I got it was for sampling- (for hiphop production) I know what the X and the S can do, and with the new firmware update I think it's pretty much the same thing.

The keyboard's sample memory is 32mb but if I expanded the internal memory to 512mb, aren't the samples ONLY saved in the G's internal memory? (i.e. the sample memory which in turn is the 512 DIMM) is that accurate?

I know Artemiy said that the RAM in the G is for TEMPORARY data (which makes sense to me), but a technician at the store in which I bought the keyboard from said that samples ARE NOT saved to the USB drives, only to the internal memory.

This is really confusing to me. I need to know whether or not I should be using a 256mb USB drive or a 4gb USB drive! Where are the samples saving to??

ANY clarity in regards to anything said above would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks all!

You have a 32Mb memory and you can expand it by up to 512Mb. (32Mb+512Mb=544Mb)

Then you have a USB drive to save to. I use a 4Gb USB drive.

When you work and play you have your samples in memory.
When you turn off the machine you have to save to the USB drive.

Same thing as with any computer.. If you write a document with MS Word and turn off the computer, it will not be saved right.. you need to save it on the hard-drive or on a USB drive.. That's the way it works on the Fantom G too.

I received my 1GB and install on the G7 and it only reeds 512mb. I might use it on the X7 but for now I am keeping it on the G7.

Just for clarification purposes: it is actually M"B"ytes as opposed to the M"b"its - that jessej wrote i.e. - Mb. I just wanted to clarify jesse's statement in case someone happens upon this thread and knows the difference between MB and Mb, and or, GB and Gb. Which you know also jesse but the way you wrote it, it has a different meaning in computer technology terms. MB is Mega Byte and Mb is Mega Bit. One Mega Byte is 8x greater in size than one Mega Bit. Or more succinctly: 1 byte is 8x greater in size than 1 bit. ;) Same goes for GB and Gb. The way you wrote it out would mean that the Fantom G fully expanded with RAM could only hold a total of 68 Mega "Bytes" of data. If someone who knows the difference and saw your figures they might have second or third thoughts about getting a Fantom G with its 'supposedly' lousy max RAM capacity of only 68MB. ;) Of course we who are regulars here at RC know what you mean even though you wrote it out wrong. But an outsider or a newcomer might be turned away from the Fantom G by such a measely RAM amount that the Fantom G Sampler "supposedly" only supports i.e. 68MB, according to the way you wrote it. ;)

The Fantom G has a maximum RAM capacity of 544MB i.e. Mega "Bytes" not Mega "Bits" as was stated. :) Sorry for being technical but when you come from a computer background and make an income in the computer field it kind of compels me to correct obvious incorrect computer technology information when necessary. I guess I felt the necessity to correct it... :) Again; no offense meant to you jesse. :)

I received my 1GB and install on the G7 and it only reeds 512mb. I might use it on the X7 but for now I am keeping it on the G7.
Interesting.. So you installed a 1GB stick of RAM on your G7 and it works but only reads 512MB of it huh? Pity... I was hoping someone would be able to get a 1GB stick to work and the FG would be able to read the whole 1GB. ;) Oh well, that pretty much settles it I suppose. Unless after getting the the next Fantom G OS update and someone is willing to try a 1GB stick again; hopefully with better results. :) My guess though is that what we have now i.e. a 512MB stick max RAM support on the G is it. Still, 512MB is an acceptable amount in my opinion. Plus the 32MB on board too, bringing it to 544MB. :)

Weird. When I put my 1GB stick from my Fantom-X8 into my G8, it read, "1,024MB." But, I couldn't write to it, so I put in a new, 512MB Patriot stick instead.

Thanks for clarifying it to those newbies. Yes, I was only thinking about the memory stick since I know that everyone who owns a FG already have 32Mb. Aloha!
