Roland VG-99 and V-Synths

Roland VG-99 and V-Synths

I have obtained a VG-99 from our friends at Guitar Center.

I have two VG-8s, so the technology is familiar. After I get the initial functionality of the guitar processing from the hex pickup, I shall interface the pitch-to-midi interface to both the Fantom X8 and my pair of V2.0 V-Synths.

I also want to interface the USB audio and record some audio tracks.

I may need some vacation time off work for the next few days.

G.A.S. is a wonderful thing.

Thanks Roland!

O.K. I bougth the VG-99 without an in store demo. Since I own two VG-8s, I know the technology. But WOW, the audio quality is amazing.

The GR-300 emulation is freaking amazing.

The poly pitch shifting seems rock solid. The alternate tunings are very stable. I can now stop using seven guitars.

I have not even set up the GK-2A pickup parameters and it is still solid.

Thanks Roland for another great product!
Finally, the D-Beam is a killer interface.

The person that programmed User105 deserves special recognition.

MOD: Please don't kill this thread. I promise to interface the midi out the V-Synth!

MarkShovel,

Why would we want to kill this kind of enthusiasm?!!?

agree!
I've just altered a little bit the tittle in acordance and... hurry with that V-Synth interfacing ;-)

Fantom X8 Midi

Well, the Fantom X8 was the nearest midi interface and the tracking surpasses anything I have played. An acoustic guitar patch on the VG-99 and the strings on the Fantom (Sahara or Machine) yield an impressive result.

I also started with the Fantom X8 since the multi timberal modes are very easy to control. I have configured the VG-99 for two modes:
1) mode mono = six output midi output channels active. In this mode I can get a different patch for each string
2) mode poly = all strings on the same midi channel

Unfortunately, I must go to work today.

VG-99 and V-Synth

I got the VG-99 connected to one V-Synth V2.0. The results are very impressive. The Fantom X8 sounds great, but the V-Synth feels even better.

I also found that the factory gains for the hex pickups are set at 65. I increased them to 100 and the tracking has improved. I have never bought a guitar pitch to mid interface because I thought they generated too many errors. The VG-99 is a clear winner for the midi note implementation.

I also found that there seems to be a pitch offset with the VG-99 and V-Synth where the notes coming out of the V-Synth are one octave lower than normal. Adjusting the OCT+/- on the V-SYnth has no effect. I'll have to read the VG-99 manual and look for a midi transpose function.

I also noticed that the V-Synth arpeggio patches do not trigger from the external midi. However, the TB patches are quite special when played from guitar.

Roland Rocks!!!

Continued progress

The USB audio from the VG-99 works well.

I have recorded my first new arrangement using the VG-99 driving midi to the V-Synth.

The VG-99 and V-Synth are great technology partners.

I have also upgraded to Sonar 7.

Strange you went from pu settings of 65 to 100 - everyone I know has decreased them to about 15 to ward off stray triggers.

IT is cool - slightly laggy at times. I'd LOVE to know how to trigger an arpegio on the synth?!? any way?

I'm using MM6 ( I found a good deal - else I'd rather have the Roland ). Hardly any gripes about the VG99 - only main one being no FC300 control of "MIDI ON/OFF" and no patch setting for midi ON OFF.
So - if you go from a patch with midi on and you switch patches to the next (where you don't want midi) you still have it until you manually go in and switch it off) pain in the rear.

But neat to think this was all played on guitar... though lots of mistakes, was just fooling around with VG99
